Little Bear

This week’s pick is the from the great Australian musical tradition called Melbourne. Well actually they’re from Hawthorn. The Hawks. I like it best when the Swans beat them. That hasn’t happened for a while. OK, enough footy talk. They’re called Little Bear and it’s a band that indulges in guitar music that appeals to an awful lot of people (ie women as much as men, possibly even more so), which isn’t an easy thing to do well. Referencing Mumford and Sons and Coldplay among others on their page fits this very well and quite frankly it’s an excellent strategy. If girls like it, then all it takes in one fella to go to the gig, say hey mate check this out, and there you go. A hit.

It’s pretty extraordinary how prolific they are actually, as it turns out there’s one guy in the drivers seat much of the time as the sole writer for the group, although the band absolutely holds its own. What an extraordinary amount of content! 2 songs up on MP3 and 4 videos – multiple songs each as it turns out. The great thing is you can really get a feel for where this band is and is going when this much is posted.

The quality of the recording of the MP3′s doesn’t hinder the fact that you can hear their capability. I really like the tempo changes in By The Beach – it could be two songs to be honest but trying to fit two together like this is a mark of ambition. Likewise experimenting with harmonies like they do is impressive, blending and mucking around, making something more complex is a great sign of things to come. Let it be a sign to all of you out there too! Post. More. Content…. Now.
With over 470 fans putting them at number 1 and inside the top 10 the future is an appealing thing if you’re Little Bear. Grrr
