Publishers are the watchdogs of the songwriters, having them onboard increases opportunities for writers to make a substantial living off their craft. As part of the amazing prizes on offer this year the winning Act will receive Up to $15,000 from Sony/ATV Publishing. Damian Trotter the Managing Director of Sony/ATV Music Publishing Australia explains what a publishing deal can do for you!

Its always been all about the songs. You can be a great singer, guitarist or dancer, have smoldering good looks and an impressive light show but unless you can consistently write great songs (or have someone who can do it for you), the chances of sustaining a lasting career in the music business are at best very slim. This is what music publishers are all about . Working with the songwriters to assist them in the development of their careers. Good music publishers take on a broader, quasi managerial role with their artists assisting them to find agents, managers, labels, international releases as well as look for every opportunity to get your songs heard whether its in films, TV, Commercials or video games.

For very few people is songwriting a natural gift that comes easily. To most, songwriting is a craft that requires plenty of practice and hard work to improve at it, so unless you have an artistic temperament and you’re prepared to devote years to the pursuit of songwriting excellence, then you may want to consider another career path. If you are prepared to work at it over time and you do have the talent, what better way to live your life and make a living than having people come to see you perform your songs live, buy your music, collaborate with or write songs for other artists?
